The Asia-Pacific region saw stable rankings among many countries in the area which kept the region in the bronze-medal 3rd place position in peaceful regions behind North America and Europe. Ramping up of tensions in areas of the China Sea caused some downward trends in safety and peace but Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar and Timor-Leste showed reductions in internal tensions leading to upward swings in ratings. Cambodia and Thailand have worked together to improve neighboring relations that have been historically cold.
Australia, New Zealand and Japan have once again remained at the top of the class in the region and enjoy stable political systems, low crime rates and a healthy population making them perennial top rated countries for travel especially in regards to the level of peace in the population. Thailand made the largest gains on the peace charts with a reduction in crimes although it still ranks as one of the countries with the most number of people incarcerated per capita.
Deterioration in relations with neighboring countries in Russia and Eurasia have again dropped the Eurasian region lower in peace status. The entire region barely breaks the top 100 peaceful countries and would likely rate low on a choice for visiting let alone living. Economic downturns and conflicts in Ukraine and Tajikistan, combined with bombings and close quarters to escalations in tensions caused by the spread of religious fanaticism, make this region especially unpredictable.
Oceania and the Asia-Pacific remain higher on the world rankings but South Asia has suffered due to Afghanistan, Nepal and India having reduced their levels of peace on many parameters on the measured data. Volatility and Islamic activities have kept this part of the world in the bottom of the rankings.
Evaluating a ranking system to gauge the most peaceful countries in the world is by no means an exact science nor is the ranking designed to be used as an absolute. Positive peace factors are used such as a country’s commitment and political determination to: ensure access to affordable, make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all and to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
The rankings of the most peaceful countries in the world should be taken as another piece of the puzzle when determining where to go for a vacation or to live or visit. Just because a country ranks high on the list of the most peaceful nations does not mean that nothing bad could happen to visitors but it can give a good idea as to the mind-set of the population of the country and the ideals that the citizens most try to adhere to.
